Track: Jozef Van Wissem – The Devil is a Fair Angel and the Serpent a Subtle Beast

KRIS DEWITTE

Dutch lute player and composer Jozef Van Wissem has shared the video for track ‘The Devil is a Fair Angel and the Serpent a Subtle Beast’ which is the second track to be taken from his forthcoming album ‘The Night Dwells in the Day’, which is set for release on the 19th of January via Incunabulum Records. This follows the first single, ‘The Call of the Deathbird‘ which featured guest vocals from Hilary Woods (who will also join Van Wissem on tour next month).

“The track grapples with the world as it moves on and all the dualism and dichotomies that follow” Van Wissem explains. “It combines darkness and light, happy and sad at the same time.”

This is cold, haunting and alone, Wissem doing what Wissem on a lute does best. Crafting magic that’s hypnotic, bewitching and suspense filled enough to lift the hairs on the back of your neck. The analogue sounds of the stringed instrument are met with a static percussive rattle that does little to ease the tension. A track that demands your full attention.
